Sacramento King Tweet for
Social Justice.
Who would have thought an American Sports Franchise would be leading the way for social change. The Sacramento Kings, in collaboration with local community organizers, are effectively using Twitter to engage with fans and other sports brands to raise awareness on social issues in the area.
We were commissioned to create several graphics and templates to support a separate Twitter account, entirely focused on the community service and outreach done by current and former Kings' players. The aesthetic needed to be consistent with that of the main Sacramento Kings' Twitter Account, but also reflect the messaging and direction of the community organizers, who chose local hero, philosopher, and political activist, Cornel West as their unofficial mascot for this endeavor.

The Twitter Account, run by a professor of American History, provides educational commentary and context to the posts. Cleverly, they have also adopted a light-hearted and colloquial tone. Finally the Kings' Twitter Account used trending hashtags to target threads that would amplify their reach and maximize their potential audience, ultimately using the team’s volunteer work as a starting point to create a dialog about community needs.
